A

ABU DHABI

The largest of the Trucial States in the Persian Gulf.
Treaty relations with Great Britain expired on 31 December 1966.
Became part of the United Arab Emirates on 1 August 1972.

    Currency :
  • 1964 100 naye paise = 1 rupee.
  • 1966 1,000 fils = 1 dinar.

ADEN

Peninsula on the South Coast of Arabia.
Formerly part of the Indian Empire. A British Colony from 1 April 1937 to 18 January 1963.
Then Aden joined the South Arabian Federation and attained independence on 30 November 1967 under the name Southern Yemen.
Eventually renamed to Yemen People's Democratic Republic.
Aden stamps were also used in the Aden Protectorate.

    Currency :
  • 1937 16 annas = 1 rupee.
  • 1951 100 cents = 1 shilling.

ADEN PROTECTORATE STATES

The states of the Eastern Aden Protectorate commonly known as the Hadhramaut.
The National Liberation Front took control on 1 October 1967.
Full independence was granted by Great Britain on 30 November 1967.
Now part of Yemen People's Democratic Republic.

    Currency :
  • 1937 16 annas = 1 rupee.
  • 1951 100 cents = 1 shilling.
  • 1966 1,000 fils = 1 dinar.

AEGEAN ISLANDS

A group of islands off the coast of asia.
Occupied by Italy in May 1912 and finally handed full control from Turkey in 1920.
Islands include Calino, Castelrosso, Carchi, Gaso Coo, Lero, Lipso, Nisiro, Patmo, Piscopi, Rodi, Scarpanto, Simi, Stampalia.
Returned to control by Greece in 1947.

  • 100 centesimi = 1 lira

AFGHANISTAN

Became a republic in 1973.

    Currency :
  • 1870 12 shahi = 6 sanar; 6 sanar = 3 abasi; 3 abasi = 1 rupee;
  • 1920 30 paisa = 1 kran; 2 kran = 1 rupee.
  • 1926 100 poul (pol) = 1 Afghani rupee.

AITUTAKI

An Island in the South Pacific, that forms part of the Cook Islands.
As a New Zealand Dependency the British Government exercised a protectorate over the Cook Islands from the 1880 until handed to New Zealand in 1901.
Cook Island stamps were used from 1932 to 1972.

    Currency :
  • 1903 12 pence = 1 shilling; 20 shillings = 1 pound.
  • 1967 100 cents = 1 dollar.

AJMAN

One of the Trucial States in the Persian Gulf.
Joined the United Arab Emirates on 1 August 1972.

ALAND ISLANDS

Previously part of Finland they became independent in 1984.

ALAOUITES

A coastal area of Syria under occupation by France in 1920.
Became a republic in 1930 and returned to Syrian control in 1937

  • 100 centimes = 1 piastre.

ALBANIA

Formerly part of the Turkish Empire until declaring independence on 28 November 1912.
Became a republic in 1925.
Occupied in the Second World War by Italy, then Germany.
Became a republic again in 1945.

  • 1913 40 paras = 1 piastre; 40 paras = 1 groach.
  • 1913 100 qint = 1 franc.
  • 1947 100 qint = 1 lek.
  • 1965 10 old leks = 1 new lek.

ALDERNEY

An island forming part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey.

  • 100 new pence = 1 pound.

ALEXANDRIA

An Egyptian port under French postal control until 31 March 1951.

    Currency :
  • 1899 100 centimes = 1 franc.
  • 1921 1000 milliemes = 1 Egyptian pound.

ALGERIA

A French territory in northern Africa.
Became independent on 2 July 1962.

    Currency :
  • 100 centimes 1 franc.

ALLENSTEIN

A district in Eastern Prussia under German control.

    Currency :
  • 100 pfennig = 1 mark.

ALSACE AND LORRAINE

A French province occupied by Germany.

ALWAR

A state of Rajputana North India, now using Indian stamps.

    Currency :
  • 12 pies = 1 anna; 16 annas = 1 rupee.

ANDORRA

An independent state in the Pyrenees, under French and Spanish control.

    Currency :
  • France 100 centimes = 1 franc.
  • Spain 100 centimes = 1 perseta.

ANGOLA

A republic of Southern Africa.
Previously under Portugal until 11 November 1975 when it became independent.

    Currency : 1870 1000 rels = 1 milrels.
    1913 100 centavos = 1 escudo.
    1932 100 centavos = 1 angolar.
    1954 100 centavos = 1 escudo.
    1977 100 lwels = 1 kwanza.

ANGUILLA

St. Christopher, Nevis and Anguilla were granted Associated Statehood on 27 February 1967.
Anguilla declared independence and the St. Christopher authorities withdrew on 7 July 1969.
On 27 July 1971 the island was restored to direct British control.

  • 100 cents = 1 West Indian dollar.

ANNAM AND TONGKING

Previously part of Indo-China now part of Vietnam.

    Currency :
  • 100 centimes = 1 franc.

ANTIGUA

One of the Leeward Islands.
Used stamps of Leeward Islands until 1 July 1956.
Achieved statehood on 3 March 1967 within the British Commonwealth and became independent on 1 November 1981.

  • 1951 100 cents = 1 West Indian dollar.

ANTIOQUIA

One of the states of the Grenadine Confederation.
Using Columbian stamps from 1886.

Previously Fiume when an Italian Regency of Carnaro.

  • 100 centesimi = 1 lira.

ARGENTINE REPUBLIC

A republic in the southeast of South America.
Formerly part of the Spanish Empire.

  • 100 centavos = 1 peso.
  • 1985 100 centavos = 1 austral.

ARMENIA

Formerly part of Russia.
Became independent after the Russian revolution in 1917.
Joined the Transcaucasian Federation on 12 March 1922.
Became part of Russia again in 1924.

ARUBA

An island in the Caribbean.
Formerly part of the Netherlands Antilles.
Became independent in 1986.

AUSTRIA

Became a republic in 1918, until joining Germany in 1938.
Became a republic again on 14 May 1945.

ASCENSION

AZORES

A group of islands in the Atlantic Ocean.
