MALAYA (BRITISH MILITARY ADMINISTRATION)

Stamps were used throughout the Malayan States and Singapore until replaced by individual stamps for each state.

MALAYA (UNDER JAPANESE OCCUPATION)

MALAYA (UNDER THAI OCCUPATION)

Included the states of Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis and Trenganu.
Transferred from Japan to Thailand in 1943 and handed back to British control at the end of World War 2.

MALAYAN FEDERATION

An independent country within the British Commonwealth.
Includes all the Malayan states, Melacca and Penang, but excluded Singapore.
In 1963 it became part of Malaysia.


MALAYAN POSTAL UNION

Stamps issued initially for use in Negri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Selangor and Straits Settlements.
Later extended to all Malayan states and Singapore.

MALAYSIA

Includes all Malaysian states including Singapore.
Singapore left the federation when it became independent in 1965.


MALDIVE ISLANDS

A group of islands to the South of Ceylon.
Became a republic on 1 January 1953.
Returned to a sultanate in 1954.
Became independent on 26 July 1965 and left the British Commonwealth.
Rejoined the British Commonwealth on 9 July 1982.

MALI

Federation of French Sudan and Senegal was formed in 1959 as an independent republic within the French Community.
The federation split in 1960, with French Sudan becaoming the independent Mali Republic.

MALTA

An island in the Mediterranean Sea to the South of Italy.
Became independent on 21 September 1964.

MANAMA

A dependency of Ajman.

MARIANA ISLANDS

Spanish Islands in the Pacific Ocean.
Guam was handed to the United States of America and the others to Germany before being passed to the U.S.

MARIENWERDER

Part of East Prussia, part of Germany from 1920.
After World War 2 it returned to Poland and renamed to its original name Kwidzyn.

MARSHALL ISLANDS

A German protectorate from 1885.
Between 1920 and 1947 it was Japanese territory.

MARTINIQUE

Self Government on 1 September 1967.
Became independent on 12 march 1968.

MAYOTTE

A Comoro island near Madagascar.

Formerly a Grand Duchy in North Germany, now part of East Germany.

MEMEL

Formerly a port area and part of Germany on the Baltic Sea.
Under Allied control in World War 1.
Captured by Lithuania in 1923 and returned to Germany in 1939.

MEXICO

A republic in Central America.
Part Maximilian of Austria's Empire between 1864 and 1867.

Part of the German Caroline Islands between 1899 and 1914.
Occupied by the Japanese in 1914.

Issued their own stamps from 1984.

MIDDLE CONGO

Formerly part of French Congo until 1906.

Formerly a Duchy and now part of Italy.
Used stamps of Sardinia from 1860 and now Italy.
