NETHERLANDS ANTILLES

Netherlands Islands in the Caribean Sea.


NETHERLANDS INDIES

Formerly a Dutch colony in the Est Indies.
Included Java, Sumatra and Parts of Borneo and New Guinea.
Renamed Indonesia in 1948.
Independent in 1949. Netherlands New Guinea was Dutch until 1962 when it was under control of the U.N.
Joined Indonesia in 1963.

The Western half of New Guinea.
Governed by Netherlands until 1962 when the U.N. took control.
Now part of Indonesia known as West Irian.

NEVIS

One of the Leeward Islands.

NEW CALEDONIA

A French Overseas Territory in the South Pacific to the East of Australia.
Includes East Caledonia and smaller islands.

An island off the East coast of Canada. Merged with Canada in 1949.

Part of the island of New Guinea.
Formerly a German colony, occupied by Australian forces between 1914 and 1918.

NEW HEBRIDES

A group of islands in the Pacific Ocean to the east of Australia.
Formerly under joint control of Britain and France.
Became independent in 1980 and was renamed to Vanuatu.

NEW ZEALAND

A group of islands in the South Pacific Ocean to the East of Australia.

NICARAGUA

A republic in Central America.
Independent in 1821.

    Currency :

NIGER COAST PROTECTORATE

A district on the West coast of Africa.
Later absorbed into South Nigeria.

NIGER

An area to the South of the Sahara. Formerley part of French West Africa. Became a independent in 1919, a French community in 1958 and a Republic in 1960.

  • 1973 100 kobo = 1 naira.

NIGERIA (British)

A former British colony on the West coast of Africa.
Includes North Nigeria, South Nigeria and Lagos.
Now divided into three regions of North Nigeria, Western Nigeria, Eastern Nigeria and Lagos.
Became independent in 1960 and a republic in 1963.
The Eastern region known as Biafra joined Nigeria in 1970 after troops invaded.

  • 1973 100 kobo = 1 naira.

NIGERIA (French)

Formerly a French West Africa colony located to the South West of the Sahara.
Became independent from 1919.
Rejoined and used stamps of French West Africa between 1944 and 1959.
Became a republic within the French community in 1958.
Independent in 1960.

    Currency :
  • 100 centimes = 1 franc.

NIUAF'OU

A remote island that is part of the kingdom of Tonga

    Currency :
  • 100 seniti = 1 pa'anga.

NIUE

One of the Cook Islands in the South Pacific.
Formerly a dependency of New Zealand it became self governing in 1974.

NORFOLK ISLAND

A small island to the East of New South Wales, Australia.
Became Self Governing in 1960.

  • 1966 100 cents = 1 Australian dollar.

NORTH BORNEO

A territory in North Borneo.
Joined Malaysia in 1963 and was renamed Sabah in 1964.

NORTHERN ISLAND

Part of Great Britain which is now referred to as the United Kingdom.

    Currency :
  • 12 pence = 1 shilling; 20 shillings = 1 pound sterling.
  • 1971 100 new pence = 1 pound.

NORTH GERMAN CONFEDERATION

Created in 1868 incorporating Bremen, Brunswick, Hamburg, Lubeck, Mecklenburg, Oldenburg, Prussia, Saxony.
Became part of German Reichspost from 1871.
Used German stamps from 1872.

    Currency :
  • 30 groschen = 1 thaler; 60 kreuzer = 1 gulden.

NORTH INGERMANLAND

An area next to Finland, temporarily independent from Russia.

    Currency :
  • 100 pennia = 1 mark.

NORTHERN NIGERIA

Situated on the West coast of Africa.
Joined Nigeria in 1914.

NORTHERN RHODESIA

A territory in Central Africa North of Zambesi.
Part of the Central African Federation from 1954 to 1963.
Became independent on 24 October 1964.

NORTH WEST RUSSIA

Used by anti-bolshevist armies in the Russian Civil War between 1918 and 1920.

    Currency :
  • 100 kopeks = 1 rouble.

NORWAY

  • 1877 100 ore = 1 krone.

NOSSI-BE

An island to the North West of Madagascar.
Became a French Protectorate in 1840.
In 1901 it became part of the Madagascan colony.

NOVA SCOTIA

An Eastern province of Canada.

    Currency :
  • 1851 12 pence = 1 shilling; 20 shillings = 1 pound.

NYASSA COMPANY

Northern part of Mozambique under Portugese control until 1894 when a Charter was granted to the Nyassa Company to control the area.
In 1929 it rejoined Mozambique.

NYASALAND PROTECTORATE

A protectorate in Central Africa.
Formerly known as British Central Africa.
Part of the Central African Federation from 1954 to 1963.
Became independent in July 1964 and renamed Malawi.
