EAST SILESIA

An area of land between Czechoslovakia and Poland.
Split between the two countries.
Stamps are overprinted "SO" on Czechoslovakian or "S.O." on Polish.

    Currency :
  • 100 halera = 1 krone.
  • 100 fenni = 1 korona.

EASTERN ROUMELIA (South Bulgaria)

An area within the Turkish Empire to the south of the Balkan Mountains.
It became semi-autonomous in 1979 and following a revolt against Turkey its name was changed to South Bulgaria.
In 1886 it became part of Bulgaria.

ECUADOR

A Republic on the West Coast of South America.
Became independent in 1830.

EGYPT

Formerly a kingdom of North East Africa.
In Turkish hands until 1914 when it became a British Protectorate.
In 1922 it became Independent and a Republic in 1953.
Egypt and Syria joined each other to form the United Arab Republic (U.A.R.) in 1958.
In 1971 the name changed to the Arab Republic of Egypt.

ELOBEY, ANNOBON AND CORISCO

Spanish Islands on the West Coast of Africa in the Gulf of Guinea.
In 1960 they became part of Spanish Guinea as used stamps of Fernando Poo.

EL SALVADOR

An Independent Republic in Central America since 1838.

Until 1968 it was Spanish Overseas Province made up of Fernando Poo and Rio Muni.
In 1968 it became the Republic the Equatorial Guinea.

  • 1973 100 centimos = 1 ekuele (plural bipkwele).
  • 1985 100 centimos = 1 franc (CFA).

ERITREA

Formerly an Italian colony in the Red Sea in North East Africa.
Under British occupation from 1942 to 1952.
It became a Federation with Ethiopia in 1952.
Ethiopian stamps are now used.

    Currency :
  • 100 centesimi = 1 lir.

ESTONIA

Formerly a province of the Russian Empire on the South Coast of the Gulf of Finland.
Became an independent Republic in 1917, and part of the Soviet Union in 1940.
It became independent again in 1991.
Joined the European Union in 2004.

  • 1918 100 kopecks = 1 rouble.
  • 1965 100 penni = 1 Estonian mark.
  • 1965 100 senti = 1 kron.
  • 2004 100 cents = 1 Euro.

eSWATINI

Previously known as Swaziland.
Renamed on 19th April 2018 by King Mswati III.

    Currency :
  • 1961 100 cents = 1 rand.
  • 1974 100 cents = 1 lilangeni (plural-emalangeni).

ETHIOPIA

Formerly named Abyssinia, an ancient empire on the East coast of Africa.
From 1936 to 1941 it was part of Italian East Africa.
Federated with Eritrea since 1952.
Proclaimed a Republic in 1974.

  • 1894 16 querche = 1 Maria Theresa-Thaler.
  • 1905 100 centimes = 1 franc.
  • 1908 16 piastres= 1 thaler.
  • 1928 16 mehaleks = 1 thaler.

  • 1946 100 cents = 1 Ethiopian dollar.
